Classes of 1963 and 1973 Gather for Commencement Exercises
In May, over 100 members of the classes of 1963 and 1973 gathered for their 40th and 50th reunions and to honor the newly graduated class of 2013 at the Commencement celebrations.
Reunion alumni participated in events such as discussions with the deans of engineering and education, the Commencement Eve gala, Commencement and reunion dinner. Fiftieth reunion participants marched in the Commencement exercises and received UMass Lowell honorary diplomas to celebrate this milestone.
“The 40th and 50th reunion alumni enjoyed reconnecting with their fellow classmates,” says Heather Makrez ’06, ’08, director of alumni relations. “They were excited to participate in their special reunion activities we planned for them, as well as to see the new developments on campus.”
During campus tours, reunion participants saw firsthand how much the University has expanded since they were students, including the new Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, an $80 million research and development facility recently opened on North Campus; and the new Health and Social Sciences Building, the first construction on South Campus in over 30 years.
Members of the classes of ’63 and ’73 were students at UMass Lowell when it was divided into smaller colleges and institutes known by different names: Mass State College at Lowell (a name it held from 1960-1968) as well as Lowell State College on the South Campus (from 1968 to 1975) and Lowell Technological Institute on the North Campus (from 1953-1975). The University became known as the University of Lowell in 1975 and UMass Lowell in 1991.
All alumni are welcome to return to campus this October for a golden alumni luncheon, in honor of all graduates who have already celebrated their 50th reunions, during Fall Festival on Oct. 12 at noon. For more information, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at Alumni_Office@uml.edu
