DifferenceMaker: Fresh Beets
Savanah’s Vision for Change through Music and Food
I began my academic journey here at UMass Lowell five years ago with the hopes of affecting positive change in people through music. Fresh Beets is my vehicle to do this.
While Lowell values music, food, and education, as evidenced by various existing initiatives, there is no business, organization, or place where these three values coexist aside from the occasional festival. I believe that these are essential components of the human experience that should not be reserved for special occasions, off limits to children, or part of a subculture of the community exclusive to members only. I believe if quality food, music and education were part of the daily ritual, this already vibrant community could grow even closer together.
By uniting food, music and education, this food truck and music venue, appropriately named Fresh Beets, will turn any street corner, park, festival, or parking lot in Lowell into a total experience which feeds the mind, body, and soul.
The food truck will sell locally-sourced, fresh, and healthy food that will change with the seasons.
On the back of the truck there will be a fold-out stage where community musicians will compliment the local flavors with tasty licks of their own.
Fresh Beets will provide access to music instruction to any child who wishes to learn, regardless of financial restraints. To accomplish this goal, Fresh Beets offers a Time Exchange Economy that students may enter into as a means for earning music lessons without paying monetarily. In exchange for students’ time either working for the food truck, performing music, or working with community farming partners, students receive music instruction on any instrument of their choice.
