How do I give to a Hawk Hatch project?
Simply select the “give now” or “support” button on the project you wish to support. You will be directed to our secure online giving form. The Hawk Hatch project you selected will already be selected as your designation. Complete the form, following the steps for your gift, contact, and billing information. You will receive an automatic email confirmation and a letter of acknowledgement for your contribution.

Is my Hawk Hatch gift tax-deductible?
Yes, your gift is tax-deductible. When you make a gift, you will receive a receipt from UMass Lowell.

How much do I have to give?
You may choose any amount greater than $1. Every dollar counts and we hope you’ll be as generous as you are able!

Is there a deadline for contributions?
Typically the projects are active for the fall and spring semesters. However, the deadline for each project is dependent on the projects need. If the funds are needed prior to the semester-end, a due date will be posted on Hawk Hatch homepage.

What happens when a project reaches its goal?
We will continue to raise funds for projects even after they reach their goals if the fundraising period has not been completed. These additional funds may be used for future development of the project or will be distributed and used at the discretion of the faculty/staff advisor, applying the additional funds towards the department or organization’s overall mission and purpose.

How do the groups receive the funds?
Your contribution is deposited directly into the project’s university budget account. UMass Lowell is committed to ensuring that your gift is used to fund your intended designation.

What happens if a project does not reach its funding goal during the fundraising period?
All funds raised will be distributed to the faculty/staff advisors to be used at their discretion for the student project.

Does my Hawk Hatch gift count as my annual contribution?
Yes, Hawk Hatch gifts do count as your annual contribution; however, these funds are distributed to the project’s department or organization and used for the project’s development.

Gifts designated to the UMass Lowell Fund enable the University to do more for our entire student body by creating additional scholarships and opportunities for out-of-classroom experiences, and updating facilities and buildings. If you are interested in making a gift to the UMass Lowell Fund, please click here. As a graduate, your gift to Hawk Hatch and the UMass Lowell Fund counts toward our overall alumni participation numbers which help to elevate our U.S. News and World Report ranking.

Is my gift eligible for my employer’s gift matching program?
To determine if your company offers a gift matching program, please contact your company's human resource office or click here to search for your company.

I made a gift; when will it appear on the website?
Updates to the website will be made Monday through Friday, within 48 hours of the time you made your gift.

How do we apply to be included on Hawk Hatch?

Please review the project guide and contact Deidra Miles at deidra_miles@uml.edu or 978-934-4807 to set up a meeting to discuss your projects funding needs.

Is my project eligible for Hawk Hatch?
All projects affiliated with UMass Lowell through an approved organization, academic, or research program are eligible. Projects may not be for profit.

How will projects be chosen?
Projects are chosen based on their creativity, feasibility, and social and community impact, and also on the commitment of the students and advisors to be actively involved in the promotion of their projects.

How long will my project be on the website?
For the fall semester, the projects will be displayed from September through January. For the spring semester, the projects will be displayed from February through June. Some projects may be eligible for a full year of fundraising.

After a project has completed its fundraising period, it will be moved to the Past Projects page on the website.

What if my project is not selected for Hawk Hatch?
Occasionally a project may not be selected for Hawk Hatch, but the Office of Annual Giving will help you to find the best way to fundraise for your project.

How much funding may I request for my project?
You may set own your fundraising goals; however, we do request that it remains under $3,000. We like to have projects of varying sizes on the site and smaller projects may be funded more quickly. Please only apply for the amount necessary to complete your project.

If selected, what do we have to do?
It is essential that students promote their own project to ensure its success. If selected, participants must provide the materials required (please see project guide) and participate in the following activities:
  • Utilize your own networks to promote your project and drive donors to the site.
  • Document your project through photos or video, providing monthly updates on your progress for your project page to the Office of Annual Giving.
