Civil Engineering: The Steel Bridge

In 2013, the Steel Bridge Team qualified for the national competition for the first time where they placed an impressive fourteenth out of forty-nine teams. This year, the team hopes to make the school community proud by placing in the top three again at the regional competition being held here at UMass Lowell.

With the new rules and specifications for the bridge construction each year, the team is faced with different challenges. In order to continue their success, the team needs funding to purchase the steel needed for the bridge, tools to construct it, welding and fabrication expenses, safety equipment, and travel expenses to compete in the national competition again.

Involvement with the Steel Bridge competition is a great opportunity for all students to put what they have learned in the classroom into use in a real world style project, and it helps teach both experienced and younger students a great deal about civil engineering and all the aspects of a real project.

The 2013 Steel Bridge Team is aiming high and they hope to place in the top ten at nationals.
